Image Moms and Students,
A very good first day of our second semester. We reviewed first-semester work and teamed up to see who best remembered the most recent Persuasive Essay outline. Maddie, Rosie and Logan bested Grant, Brandon, Evan and Grace. We had to split the boys from the girls because the gals were slamming the guys. We'll repeat this outline competition on a regular basis. The children were, as always, attentive and delightful. I love tutoring them.
The students were reminded that every form of writing is contained in the Persuasive Essay. As we go through these lessons we are learning all of the essential skills of a writer. For the rest of their lives, all they have to do is adapt these tools to the kind of writing in which they will engage.
Specifically, this week's lesson, under Invention (coming up with something to say), is Comparison. During class students were shown how to compare and contrast two terms using the attached worksheet. For homework, pick two terms in your new thesis statement and compare them using the worksheet provided below, which includes tips not on the worksheet in the Student Workbook.
The basis for second semester persuasive essay is The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Any student who has not finished reading the book is asked to do so.
Homework (Please bring all homework to class next week)
1) Using the First Semester for Dummies notes distributed to moms
during class, complete the following steps:
I. How to create an issue
II. How to create a basic ANI chart
III. Improving your basic ANI chart
IV. Sorting Your ANI chart and creating a Thesis Statement
V. Selecting Your Proofs
2) Complete the attached Comparison Worksheet (not the one in
the Student Workbook.
Note to moms:
A hard-copy of notes (LTW for Dummies-First Semester) was distributed but if your student did not get one, please see the attachments below. A hard copy is better because it includes the attachments placed within the notes. Additional copies will be available next week for those who might need it.
It is my pleasure to be with your children weekly. Thank you for entrusting them to our care. Please call should you have any questions.
