This week the boys defeated the girls in the Outline Competition.
Even so, neither side had it perfect, so we spent some time going over the Basic Persuasive Essay with Amplification outline.
We discussed Division in which we compare similarities and differences of two terms of our choice. First we noted areas in which our two terms were in agreement. When we could find no more points on which our terms could agree, we realized we had reached the point of disagreement, and we practiced identifying that point. This is important because the point of disagreement is what our essay is all about. We are trying to relay that, while we agree with the other side on some issues, at a certain point we disagree, and here are the reasons why.
This week's homework is to complete the outline on page 73 of the Student Workbook. There should be one complete sentence (your thesis). All other lines are for clues or hints to help you remember when you write your essay next week. If we were in Essentials, this would be like a key-word outline. You may write directly in the book if you wish.
The Teacher's Manual had a sample that is pretty good and I am attaching it to help you with Agreement, Disagreement and Distribution if you are still a bit wobbly with this new concept.
Next week in class we will discuss your homework and do more review.
You are delightful and fun and I love being one of your tutors.
